Who We Are

In July 2021, Gary Flinn (Gary L. Flinn Co.) and James Detling (Detling Law Office) merged to become Flinn & Detling Law Group Co., L.P.A. It was a natural fit for the two attorneys, since they had overlapping areas of experience, both having practiced extensively in farm law, probate matters, estate planning, and corporate law.

When Gary retired in late 2022, he knew he was leaving his clients in good hands, and could promise continuity of services to those he’d served.

Whether you’re new to our firm or you’ve been with one of the firms since pre-merger, welcome!

James S. Detling, Esq.

Jim was raised on a farm in northern Darke County and attended The Ohio State University, majoring in Agricultural Economics and graduating with honors, before working as an Organization Director for the Ohio Farm Bureau for two years. He attended the University of Toledo Law School, where he was the Executive Editor of the Toledo Law Review.  He had the honor of graduating first in his class, was named the school’s Valedictorian and Outstanding Graduate, and was named to the prestigious legal honorary, Order of the Coif.

After working for a large law firm in Toledo where he focused on commercial litigation, Jim returned home to Darke County in 1995. Since then, he has represented numerous local individuals, farmers, and businesses, and has earned a reputation for being an honest and sincere attorney who looks out for the best interest of his clients.

In addition to his professional responsibilities, Jim maintains a strong commitment to the community. Some prior and current boards on which he has served include the YMCA, Wayne Industries, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Shelby/Darke Counties, Red Cross, Darke County Board of Elections, Darke County Foundation, and the Darke County Law Library Resources Board.  He has also served the community as a business law instructor at Edison State Community College.

Jim has four adult children and two grandchildren. He and his wife Rebecca live in Greenville, and like to spend their time running, supporting local events, or attending concerts.
